World Wetlands Day celebrated in Manipur, Assam

Imphal (Manipur)/Guwahati (Assam) Feb 03 (ANI): Along with the rest of the world, the World Wetlands Day was observed in the northeast states of Manipur and Assam.World Wetlands Day is observed every year on February 2 to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and our planet. Themed 'Wetlands and Water,' the day was celebrated across the world with an emphasis on the importance of wetlands as a "source of freshwater and encourages action to restore them and stop their loss". In Manipur, the Ngamee Lup (Fisher Men Organization) of Pumlenpat observed the World Wetlands Day at Tonoma Chingjin, Mamang Ching of Pumlenpat. The event focused on the awareness about the degradation of Pumlenpat, the second largest lake of Manipur after the Loktak Lake, and to voice the importance of conserving the lake located 68 km from Imphal in Kakching district. During the observation, the farmers of Pumlenpat shared their experience concerning the degrading conditions of the lake. Environmentalists and community protectors from across the districts were present at the event. In Assam, World Wetlands Day was organized by Assam Forest Department. Minister of Forest and Environment, Parimal Shuklabaidya along with senior officers of the department were present in the event.
