Mushroom cultivation opens new avenues for local farmers in Manipur

Imphal (Manipur) March 3 (ANI): Entrepreneurs in Manipur have developed an innovative mechanism to make mushroom farming a sustainable source of business. One among them is a 50-year-old mushroom cultivator RK Binita Devi from Moirangkampu Sajeb village, Imphal East district. She has been cultivating varieties of edible mushrooms for more than a decade. Binita is growing around 3000 packets of mushrooms with six varieties in her farm 'Binita Mushroom'. Of the six varieties grown, three varieties of mushroom are grown in winter and the rest are cultivated during the summer season. Binita has trained more than 700 farmers. "I am growing around 2000/3000 packets and generating an income of Rs. 1.5 lakhs per month. I have employed 3 regular staff", says a 30-year-old Zidda Rahaman Singaimayum, a mushroom cultivator. The grown packed mushroom farming of the state is gradually emerging as a thriving business for much educated unemployed youth of the state. The best favorable season to grow this mushroom is Manipur is from September to February
