GBP worth Rs 38.64 lakh seized International Courier Terminal in Chennai

Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Aug 21 (ANI): One arrested after GBP worth Rs 38.64 lakh was seized by Chennai Air Customs at International Courier Terminal in Chennai. The courier parcel, a carton box, which was declared to contain tumblers, steel plates, apparels and spices was taken up for detailed examination. On opening the carton, it was found to contain 25 quarter steel plates along with other declared items. The plates were found to be unusually heavy and made of high gauge steel. On close examination it was noticed that the steel plates were made by moulding two separate steel plates together. On cut opening the two moulded steel plates it was found that Pound Sterling notes were ingeniously concealed inside. Total 40000 Great Britain Pounds in denomination of 50 equivalent to Rs. 38.64 lakhs were recovered and seized under the Customs Act, 1962 r/w F.E.M. (Export and Import of Currency) Regulations, 2015.
