He drew attention to the constitutional right to build places of worship and said that he is not doing anything unconstitutional, "as anyone can make a temple or church, so can I".
This comes after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) suspended West Bengal MLA Humayun Kabir on Thursday over his remarks, in which he claimed he would inaugurate a Babri Masjid in the state's Murshidabad district today.
Suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir is set to lay the foundation stone of Babri Masjid in Beldanga on Saturday, an event that has prompted heightened administrative attention and extensive security arrangements in Murshidabad district.
As today marks the 33rd anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition, security forces in Ayodhya and across other areas of Uttar Pradesh are on alert and are conducting thorough checks of vehicles on all routes.
The Calcutta High Court on Friday did not intervene in the case regarding the foundation-laying ceremony of the Babri Masjid in West Bengal's Murshidabad.
"Babar was an invader, and he has committed grave atrocities. If anyone identifies themself as related to Babar, we will consider them an invader too, and they will be treated accordingly," he said.
Speaking with ANI in Murshidabad, Kabir alleged that she is working in the interests of the RSS. Kabir pointed out the significant increase in RSS branch offices in the state, from 400 in 2011 to 12,000 currently, implying Banerjee's alignment with the organisation.
In a strong statement targeting the Chief Minister, Kabir said to reporters, "The Chief Minister should be an ex-Chief Minister. In 2026, the Chief Minister will not become the Chief Minister, will not be sworn in, and will be branded as an ex-Chief Minister."
"I have come here for a meeting with the district president, will give a reaction later. But I have been suspended from the party, not as an MLA, let the meeting happen first," he said.
"We noticed that one of our MLAs from Murshidabad suddenly declared that he would build the Babri Masjid. Why suddenly Babri masjid? We already warned him. As per the decision of our party, TMC, we are suspending MLA Humayun Kabir," the Kolkata mayor said in a press conference here.
Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Wednesday sharply criticised Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for claiming that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru wanted to rebuild the Babri Masjid with public funds, calling the statement "a complete lie".
