Norway to upgrade its 'Doomsday' seed vault spending $12.7 million

New Delhi, Feb 26 (ANI): Norway will spend $12.7 million to upgrade its 'Doomsday' seed vault that is situated at an abandoned Arctic coal mine to store and safeguard the world's crops during the time of man-made or natural apocalyptic disasters. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault will have emergency power and refrigerating units and other electrical equipment that emits heat through the tunnel under the up gradation. The vault has the capacity to hold 4.5 million crop varieties. It currently holds more than 8, 90,000 samples from different parts of the world. The vault aims to meet the agricultural needs after catastrophic disasters.
