App threatening privacy made mandatory in Xinjiang

New Delhi, Nov 15 (ANI): A mobile app named Jingwangweishi, also called ‘web cleaning soldier’, has been made mandatory for the residents of northwest China's Xinjiang region. The app promises to "clear the trash off your phone", but is speculated to include various nefarious features. Financial Times reported that the software also scans phones for digital fingerprints of illicit files. An independent security researcher named Avram Meitner has claimed that it informs authorities when it finds these files. Developers claimed that the app is unsophisticated and can be easily bypassed by tech-savvy users. The application has posed a threat to privacy and induced paranoia among the less knowledgeable.
