Uttar Pradesh Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar on Tuesday defended the Waqf Amendment Act, stating that it has been brought for the benefit of "poor" Muslims. He alleged that those opposing the legislation were the ones who rob the rights of the poor.
As the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly continued to witness uproar over the Waqf Amendment Act, Awami Ittehad Party MLA Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh on Tuesday accused the ruling National Conference of having a "fixed match" with the BJP.
Earlier, multiple MLAs, including from the ruling National Conference had demanded a discussion on the recently passed reforms to the Waqf Board. PDP had also moved a resolution urging the Central government to repeal the act, however that resolution was not voted on earlier today.
"The MLAs represent more than 70 lakh people. They want there should be a discussion in the House for Muslims too...Our rights are being taken away every day, from 5th August (2019) till date. This was confined to Jammu and Kashmir until now. But now, this is being extended to Muslims across
"Speaker sir has the pleasure of NC, He is the speaker of the National Conference. He was chosen by the party, if the party feels that he is obstructing, then bring no confidence (motion) change him and bring a new speaker, otherwise it reeks of theatre. People will taking us intro confiden
PDP President Mehbooba Mufti condemned the Act, asserting that it goes beyond religious matters and represents a direct assault on the rights, beliefs, and dignity of the country's crores of Muslims.
Opposition parties, including the People's Democratic Party and the Awami Ittehad Party had moved for an adjournment motion to discuss the Waqf Act, which was then subsequently denied by the Speaker under Rule 58 of the house. PDP MLA Waheed Para was marshalled out of the Assembly premise
"... We were earlier opposing this new Waqf Act because it is a bulldozer attack on the Constitution and the fundamental rights enshrined in it. Nobody can explain which clauses in this act will give relief to the Munambam people..." Rajeev told reporters.
"It's profoundly disappointing that the speaker J&K Assembly has rejected the motion on the Waqf Bill. Despite securing a strong mandate, the government appears to have completely yielded to the BJP's anti-Muslim agenda, cynically attempting to appease both sides," Mufti posted on X.<
