The mound burial system of the Ahom dynasty in Assam Moidams was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List under the category Cultural Property, on Friday. The decision was taken during the ongoing 46th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC), held in the national capital, Delhi.
The Finance Minister in her Budget speech said that tourism has always been a part of India's civilization and the government's efforts in positioning India as a global tourist destination will also create jobs, stimulate investments and unlock economic opportunities for other sectors.
Vishal V Sharma, India's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to UNESCO, emphasized the significance of the World Heritage Committee by highlighting India's role as a cultural superpower and underscored that India's message to the world development and heritage.
The inauguration of the session took place on Sunday at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital, marking the first time India is hosting the World Heritage Committee Meeting. This significant event will run until July 31, 2024.
Lauding India's heritage and culture, the director general of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay said that she is thankful to India for its commitment, which is "inspiring" and added that support will be further reinforced to pave way for other international cooperation.
