Stock market closed on a negative note on Friday, with the Sensex plunging 738.81 points to settle at 80,604.65 and the Nifty falling 275.25 points to close at 24,530.90.
Having closed flat on Monday, the Indian benchmark indices closed in the green after they touched a fresh all-time high during the day's trade. Sensex touched a new all-time high at 80,397, up over 400 points
The BSE Sensex ended the day with an uptick of 131.18 points closing at 77,341.08. Meanwhile, the broader NSE Nifty 50 climbed 36.75 points to finish at 23,537.85.
Despite the lackluster overall market performance, the Construction, Automobile, and Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) banks sectors were the standout performers.
The Sensex surged by 132.44 points, closing at 73,961.31, while the Nifty climbed by 42.05 points, reaching 22,530.70. The upbeat sentiment was reflected in the performance of Nifty-listed companies, with advances outnumbering declines.
The Sensex, India's benchmark index, closed at 74,482.78, marking a decline of 188.50 points or 0.25 per cent after reaching an intraday and all-time high of 75,111.39. Similarly, the Nifty 50 concluded at 22,604.85, down by 38.55 points or 0.17 per cent from its 52-week high of 22,783.35.
Among the Nifty companies, 24 saw advances while 25 faced declines. Grasim, Bharti Airtel, Nestle India, Maruti, and Tata Motors emerged as the top gainers, while Sun Pharma, BPCL, Reliance, Dr Reddy, and Hindalco were among the top losers.
