A revenue official, who visited a village in the Faridkot district of Punjab, was held hostage by a group of farmers. Farmers agreed to free the official only after getting written assurance from the administration.
The farmers demanded a written assurance of no challan over the burning of their stubble and said that the official will not be set free until their demands are met.
"Request you to undertake urgent and substantive measures to control Parali (stubble) burning in Punjab, which has converted the national capital once again into a gas chamber," Saxena wrote.
Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupendra Yadav blamed stubble burning in Punjab as a reason behind the worsening air quality in the national capital.
Local farmers in Punjab's Bathinda district expressed their dissatisfaction over Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann-led state government's failure to find an alternative to the stubble burning problem.
