As heavy rain lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu and the India Meteorological Department issued a heavy rain alert for the next seven days, the district administration has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Kanyakumari on December 18.
Indian Meteorological Department scientist Naresh Kumar briefed about the weather change expected in northwest India due to the Western disturbance in the Himalayan region.
According to IMD, a cyclonic circulation that was over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal off the south Sri Lanka coast now lies over the Comorin area and neighbourhood.
The southern districts of Tamil Nadu, including Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Kanyakumari and Ramanathapuram, have been witnessing heavy rains since the early morning hours of Sunday.
Light to moderate rain is likely to occur at many places in South Tamil Nadu and a few places in North Tamil Nadu for three consecutive days starting today (Friday), said the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

India Meteorological Department Director General Dr Mrityunjay Mohapatra on Wednesday said that the cyclonic storm Michaung weakened and won't have any disastrous impact.
