Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday criticised the Election Commission of India (ECI) over its handling of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's allegations related to voter lists, saying that the constitutional body is "hurting its reputation".
Citing precedents from 1981, 1995 and 2005, Gogoi argued that such discussions have taken place in the past, contrary to the government's recent claims. He asserted that the refusal to allow debate reflects the government's discomfort and fear of transparency in electoral reforms.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra questioned the government's reluctance to hold a debate, stating that the Opposition was "only asking for a discussion" and that the issue could be "easily resolved" if the ruling party was willing.
