The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that based on India's extradition request, fugitive Indian businessman Mehul Choksi was arrested in Belgium and the Indian government is working closely with Belgian authorities to facilitate his extradition.

Giving an example of the recent extradition of Thawwur Rana from the US, Fabian said that it took 17 years for him to be extradited, and hence we must not expect the same with Choksi soon.
The former MD of Gitanjali Gems also called on authorities to be better prepared this time, recalling how Choksi had previously escaped legal action in Dominica.
Vaibhav Khuraniya, one of the complainants in a fraud case against Choksi, said that it may not be easy to bring him back to India due to legal complexities involved in extradition.
Following the arrest of fugitive Indian businessman Mehul Choksi by the law enforcement authorities in Belgium, his lawyer, Vijay Aggarwal, stated that Choksi's "human rights" will be "greatly affected" if he is extradited back to the country.
Choksi was arrested in Belgium on Saturday after local authorities confirmed his presence in the country. Sources said that preparations were being made for his extradition to India. However, Choksi has started preparing for a legal battle, with lawyers looking to secure bail.
