Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal assessed the flood situation in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts on Thursday. The minister also undertook a boat ride from Guijan ghat in Tinsukia district to Mulukgaon in Dibrugarh to assess the extent of the damage due to the flood.
The flood situation in Assam is critical with a total death toll of 52 people and about 21.13 lakh people are affected in 29 districts by the second wave of flood.
Assam Rifles have launched Operation Jal Raahat II to combat rising water levels and prevent flooding in residential areas of Imphal West and East districts where heavy rain disrupted normal lives.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that there has been a marginal improvement in the flood situation adding 28 districts and a population of 11.34 lakh are affected across 2,208 villages.
The Met office also said that the temperature recorded a decline in the state right now. The temperature in the entire state recorded around 30 to 32 degree celsius for the time being and the conditions were likely to remain the same as of now.
The flood situation in Assam has deteriorated with more than 6.44 lakh people in 19 districts being affected. Floods have claimed 35 lives so far with one person dying in Tinsukia district on Monday, said Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
After seven people lost their lives due to lightning in six districts in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his condolences and announced financial aid of Rs 4 lakh each to the dependents of the deceased.
The Assam CM said that the state's Ministers have been directed to visit flood-hit districts, and MLAs and Ministers have been requested to assist flood-affected people.
