Leaders and doctors on Monday criticised the sentence of life imprisonment for the convict in the RG Kar rape-murder case by the Sealdah court, demanding a death penalty for this heinous crime.
CPI-M leader Brinda Karat on Monday expressed dissatisfaction over the punishment given to the convict in the RG Kar case, saying that the state government should also have been held accountable.
The attack took place when an intruder, later identified as Mohd Shariful Islam Shehzad, entered the actor's home with the alleged intent of theft. Saif sustained stab wounds to his thoracic spine while attempting to intervene during a confrontation between the intruder and his housemaid.
"It is a norm in our judicial system that death sentence is given in rarest of cases. The judge must have covered the evidence and brutality of the crime. Second thing is that he must have considered the personal circumstances of the convict..." Luthra said speaking to ANI.
After Sealdah Court sentenced Sanjay Roy, the convict in the RG Kar rape and murder case, to life imprisonment, the father of the trainee doctor raised questions on the investigation conducted by CBI and Kolkata Police, saying that "we want justice, not compensation."

The Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court announced life imprisonment for the accused Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar rape and murder case on Monday. Along with this, the court has also fined Rs 50,000 to the accused.
Speaking to ANI, Sehrawat said "The state government should take this case forward and ensure death penalty to the convict. The big question is on what basis did the court take the decision. In such a case, it is the state government's job to present the facts strongly...."
