Atiq Ahmed, who was never punished in any case in the last 43 years, despite a hundred cases being registered against him, was finally given life imprisonment on Tuesday, in what could serve as an example for the whole country.
A Prayagraj MP-MLA court, which today held the five-time MLA guilty and two others in the abduction case, however, acquitted seven others including the mafia turned politician's brother Ashraf.
The Court pronounced life sentences to Atiq Ahmed, Dinesh Pasi and Khan Saulat Hanif in the case and has also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on each of the three. All the other seven accused in the case, including Ashraf, the brother of Atiq Ahmed have been acquitted.
However, Atiq's brother Ashraf, who was also an accused in the case and was brought to the court, was acquited. Ashraf along with six others were acquitted by the court. The court, however, is yet to pronounce the sentence in the case.

The police van, carrying mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, arrived at Prayagraj MP-MLA Court in Uttar Pradesh for a hearing in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case on Tuesday.
Atiq is an accused in the BSP MLA Raju Pal 2005 murder case and the recent Umesh Pal murder case. Umesh Pal, who was a prime witness in the Raju Pal murder case, was shot dead in broad daylight in Prayagraj on February 24 this year.
Atiq Ahmed, a gangster-turned-politician and an accused in the abduction case, was brought from Sabarmati Jail to Prayagraj jail on Monday after an over 24-hour long drive from Gujarat. He will be produced today before the court in connection with the Umesh Pal kidnapping case.
