The workers of All India Mahila Congress in Delhi started a protest against the Delhi government and demanded the resignation of Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi Marlena over the deaths at Asha Kiran shelter home on Friday.
The official report stated that a total of 25 deaths were recorded in February 2024, out of which 14 deaths occurred (Male-6, Female-8) in the shelter home in the month of July only.
The most number of deaths (14) have been recorded in the month of July in Asha Kiran Shelter Home being run in Delhi's Rohini area, an official report said.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma visited Asha Kiran, a government home for the mentally challenged in Rohini, Delhi, following reports of multiple deaths among its residents.
The report from Asha Kiran Shelter Home to the Delhi Government mentioned loose motion and unconsciousness as being the reason behind deaths. Other reasons included- mild fever, loose stools and vomiting.
Under the Asha Kirana program, comprehensive eye care services, including doorstep eye check-ups, diagnosis, and treatment including distribution of spectacles, and cataracts surgeries will be provided to families free of cost.
Asha Kiran Barla has a personal best of 4 minutes 31 seconds in the 1500m event. On Friday she stayed behind the leading group in the initial stages but took the lead with 300m to go. She crossed the finish line nearly 13 seconds slower than her best time of 4:31 clocked last year.
