New Delhi [India], August 2 (ANI): National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma visited Asha Kiran, a government home for the mentally challenged in Rohini, Delhi, following reports of multiple deaths among its residents.
The Delhi government has since ordered a magisterial inquiry into the alleged fatalities at the shelter home.
"After the matter came to the notice of the government, the Delhi government has ordered a magistrate inquiry into the Asha Kiran Shelter Home case. As soon as the investigation report comes, strict action will be taken against the culprits," said AAP MLA Dilip Pandey.
National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma arrived at Asha Kiran today after several deaths were reported.
"Shelters run by the Delhi government have become a death trap for innocent people. Asha Kiran, which has a capacity of 250, has 450 people living in it without proper food, water and medicine. Atishi (Delhi Minister) should be made responsible for contaminated water they are been provided," the NCW Chief said.
"Most of the women who died in Asha Kiran Shelter home run by the Delhi government were under 40 years. Young lives are lost because of the sheer negligence of the Delhi Government. Who is responsible for these deaths @AtishiAAP?" she added.
Voicing concern over the death of the inmates at Asha Kiran shelter home, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari said, "It is difficult to breathe in Delhi. It is difficult to read the news... Mentally challenged people are kept in Asha Kiran. Information has been received that children are not given proper food there; if children fall ill, they are not given treatment... The Aam Aadmi Party has no moral right to stay in its position. Such news comes every day... Where does Aam Aadmi Party do what it says?... The Aam Aadmi Party government has brought Delhi to a very sad situation. To save Delhi, it is very important to remove such people from the post."
Asserting that the issue will be raised by her in the parliament, Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal said, "In the past 20 days, 13 deaths have occurred at Asha Kiran shelter home run by the Delhi government... The reasons are yet not known... When I was there in DCW, I inspected the situation here... the situation here is very bad as there is no proper staffing, and no proper doctors are there... We made a report at that time and submitted it to the Delhi Government, but no action was taken at that time... I demand that action should be taken in this matter and an FIR should be lodged".
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla blamed Aam Aadmi Party's negligence and corruption as a reason behind these incidents.

"27 deaths have occurred here in the past few months...AAP's negligence and corruption are the reason behind these incidents... The cause of this seems to be dirty water, infection, tuberculosis, and pneumonia - several such reports are going on in the media... Why has the government not done anything in this matter? This cannot be resolved until Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi resign...AAP should reply over this," Poonawalla said. (ANI)
