Muzaffarabad (PoK) May 11 (ANI): Protests against skyrocketing inflation turned violent as police used brute force in PoK’s Muzaffarabad. Awami Action Committee vowed to continue protests amid crackdown and thousands took to streets to raise their voice. The Committee had called for protest, demanding tax-free electricity from Mangla Dam and subsidies on wheat flour. The strike gained intensity by overnight police raids resulting in the arrests of numerous leaders and activists. Shaukat Nawaz Mir, a prominent figure in movement, narrowly avoided arrest and emerged as a leading voice. Clashes ensued between law enforcement and protesters in Muzaffarabad, Dadyal, Mirpur, and other parts of PoK. Reports indicate that Pakistan's security forces employed excessive force against peaceful demonstrators. Tear gas and bullets were reportedly used against unarmed civilians exercising their right to protest. A similar strike occurred last year, echoing demands for fair electricity pricing aligned with production costs of hydel power. The assurances from authorities have proved to be hollow as grievances persisted, triggering widescale protests.
