Russia vetoes U.N. resolution on Syria chemical weapons attacks

United Nations, Nov 18 (ANI): Russia on Friday, vetoed a Japanese-drafted U.N. Security Council resolution to extend an international inquiry into who is to blame for chemical weapons attacks in Syria. The Japanese-drafted resolution would have extended by one month a joint inquiry by the U.N. and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, into the blame for those attacks. With 12 votes in favor, the resolution would have passed, but permanent member Russia used its veto power and voted no. The inquiry, known as the Joint Investigative Mechanism, found the Syrian government used the banned nerve agent ‘sarin’ in an April attack and chlorine in other attacks. It also blamed Islamic State for using mustard gas. Without the extension, the inquiry into the attacks ends on Friday.
