Nepal: Thousands of teachers protest over delay in endorsing education bill

Thousands of teachers in Nepal protested in Kathmandu over delays in endorsing the School Education Bill, demanding amendments and implementation of past agreements. Led by the National Teachers Federation (NTF), at least 36,000 teachers marched, urging action within the winter parliamentary session. The bill remains stalled due to Education Minister Bidya Bhattarai’s illness and conflicting subpanel discussions. Teachers oppose local government control, fearing political bias. Protests began in September 2023, leading to a six-point agreement, but delays persist. Stronger protests are expected if demands remain unmet.
