Khokhloma: An endless array of unique Russian designs

Updated:3 years, 6 months ago

Moscow (Russia), Nov 29 (ANI/TV BRICS): The characteristic oh-Ing of the master of Khokhloma painting, Nikolay Gushchin, reminds us of the name of this folk craft in its homeland. Art historians pronounce it in the French manner, Khokhlomá. At the exhibition in the Russian state library of arts, you can see the crockery that was painted by modern craftsmen. The drawing is more ornate and subject-driven. But the principle is the same as hundreds of years ago. The gingerbread cake pattern looks like a square or rhombus, a sky symbol, with the sun in the centre. Artists express their intention through three colours that is black, red and gold. According to the organisers of the exhibition, even specialists cannot define the exact origin of this technique. What is known is that the khokhloma appeared in the 17th century in the Nizhniy Novgorod region, near the beautiful river Volga. It reflected all the richness of nature in the region. At the same time, wooden tableware in Russia was almost superseded by then fashionable porcelain, but later Khokhloma painting was able to regain its former popularity. Thanks to the masters of this unique art who have preserved it to this day.
