The Israeli army took reporters to the Hezbollah tunnel shaft located 200 metres from a UN post in southern Lebanon. Brig. Gen. Yiftach Norkin stated that the structure built by Hezbollah violates United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006, was intended to help the Lebanese army keep its southern border free of armed personnel. The United Nations has reported that both Israel and Hezbollah have long violated Resolution 1701. The tour included a display of ammunition and an Iranian IED that Israel alleged was intended for use by Hezbollah. The Israeli military requested approval before journalists could transmit photographs and video footage taken during the trip. The UN reported that two Israeli Merkava tanks destroyed a gate of its peacekeeping force UNIFIL and forcibly entered the area. Israeli military claims that Hezbollah fired anti-tank missiles at Israeli troops, wounding 25, prompting an Israeli response. Five peacekeepers have been wounded in recent strikes, most of which UNIFIL attributes to Israeli forces. PM Netanyahu called for the withdrawal of UNIFIL from Hezbollah strongholds, citing the need to prevent Hezbollah from using peacekeepers as human shields
