Ireland's Paul Robinson sets record by running the fastest mile ever run in Antarctica

Antarctica, Dec 03 (ANI): Ireland's Paul Robinson made a quick visit to Antarctica recently, at the request of the organisers of the Antarctic ice marathon race, to attempt a very different record. The elite athlete is no stranger to the mile distance (1.609km) having previously run a 3:51.1 in the 2014 Fifth Avenue Mile race in New York City, and now with his sights set on qualifying for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. On November 25 Robinson lined up for a straight one mile run, with the course distance checked repeatedly by organisers with global positioning instruments. A camera drone tracked him throughout his run with the organisers using an electronic timing system. Luckily the conditions were perfect for visibility with sun, blue skies and little wind. Braving temperatures of minus 20 degrees Celsius with slippery snow underfoot, Robinson ran the distance in a time of four minutes 17.9 seconds which organisers say must be the fastest mile ever run in Antarctica. The IAAF lists Morocco's Hicham el Guerrouj as the record-holder for the mile distance in a time of three minutes 43.13 set in the balmy conditions of Rome in July 1999.
