Iraq, Dec 10 (ANI): Iraq has formally declared that its fight against Islamic State is over after three years of heavy combat. The Prime Minister of Iraq Haider Al-Abadi said troops had purged the remaining members of the militant group, three years after they captured around a third of Iraq's territory. He added that forces had recaptured the last areas still under I.S. control along the border with Syria. The group's de facto capital in Iraq, Mosul fell in July after a gruelling nine-month campaign backed by a U.S.-led coalition. And then Iraqi forces captured the last remaining town under Islamic State control, Rawa near that border last month. In September, Islamic State's Syrian capital Raqqa fell to a U.S.-backed Kurdish-led coalition. The forces fighting Islamic State in both countries say they now expect a new phase of guerrilla warfare, typical to the group.
