Bangladesh: Protesters set Mujibur Rehman’s house on fire; use bulldozers to demolish ‘history’

Dhaka (Bangladesh), Jan 6 (ANI): Thousands of protesters set fire to the home of Bangladesh's founding leader Mujibur Rahman on February 5. The museum turned house was vandalised after ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s fiery social media speech. Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday, delivered an aggressive social media speech calling on her supporters to stand against the interim government. Several thousand protesters, some armed with sticks, hammers, and other tools, were seen around the historic house and the independence monument. The agitated protesters used crane and excavators to demolish the building belonging to the Awami League chief’s paternal family. The rally was organised alongside a broader call, dubbed "Bulldozer Procession", to disrupt Hasina's scheduled 9 p.m. online address on Wednesday. Protesters, many aligned with the "Students Against Discrimination" group, had expressed their fury over Hasina's speech. The student protesters viewed the speech as a challenge to the newly formed Md Yunus’ interim government. A symbol of the country's establishment, the house is where Bangabandhu Mujibur Rehman declared Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan in 1971. The student-led movement has voiced plans to dismantle the country's 1972 Constitution, which they argue embodies the legacy of Hasina’s father's rule. Tensions have been escalating in Bangladesh since August 2024, when mass protests forced Hasina to flee to neighbouring India
