World Water Day: Transforming Gujarat - Impact of Sujalam Sufalam Initiative

On World Water Day, Gujarat showcases the remarkable impact of the Narmada Canal and Sujalam Sufalam initiatives in transforming once water-scarce regions. Chobari village in Kutch, once plagued by severe drought, now flourishes with a steady water supply, significantly boosting agriculture and livelihoods. Launched in 2003 and recognized by the World Bank, the Sujalam Sufalam initiative has played a crucial role in groundwater recharge, revitalizing wells and expanding irrigation. Farmers have witnessed increased productivity, particularly in cotton and groundnut cultivation. These successful efforts also inspired national programs like the Jal Shakti Abhiyan and Atal Bhujal Yojana, demonstrating how sustainable water management fosters prosperity and strengthens rural communities.
