On September 13, the central government announced the renaming of Port Blair in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands to "Sri Vijaya Puram," as part of efforts to move away from its colonial past.Union Home Minister Amit Shah shared the news on his X handle, noting the Andaman & Nicobar Islands' significant role in India's freedom struggle and history. He explained that "Vijaya Puram" symbolizes the victory of India's freedom movement, and highlighted the islands' importance as both a historical naval base for the Chola Empire and a key center for India’s strategic and developmental goals. This decision follows Prime Minister Modi's earlier move to rename three islands in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago in honor of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Ross Island was renamed Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, Neil Island became Shaheed Dweep, and Havelock Island was renamed Swaraj Dweep. These islands are now popular tourist destinations.Speaking on the same, Anil Tiwari, BJP State Secretary and Convener, Andaman and Nicobar Islands said, "We are thankful to the Government of India for this step of renaming Port Blair to Sri Vijaya Puram. This historic decision is a testament to the vision and commitment to honouring our nation's rich heritage. The renaming of Port Blair is a fitting tribute to the sacrifices of our freedom fighters and a significant step towards preserving our cultural identity.”
