Flowing through Rajasthan’s Dungarpur district is a small yet immensely significant river — the Moran. Rising from the waters of Gapsagar Lake, the river winds its way through dry and rugged hill terrain, travelling nearly 64.3 kilometres before finally merging with the Mahi River. In Dungarpur’s Khadagda village, the Moran River — once reduced to a forgotten, lifeless stretch — is now poised to return in a renewed and vibrant form. This remarkable revival is the result of a collective effort between the local administration and the villagers. The movement took shape with the determined initiative of storyteller Kamlesh Bhai Shastri, who inspired the tribal community and local residents, raised awareness, and spearheaded the campaign to bring the Moran River back to life. After the successful rejuvenation of the river, Union Minister for Jal Shakti C.R. Patil and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma paid a visit to the site and participated in a specially organised programme. Preparations are underway to develop the river on a larger scale, with a Detailed Project Report (DPR) currently being prepared.
