Pariej Wetland: Gujarat’s Sarus Crane conservation success story

Pariej Wetland in Gujarat’s Kheda district has emerged as a thriving conservation and eco-tourism hotspot, offering a safe habitat to the Sarus Crane. A June 2025 survey recorded 1,477 Sarus cranes across Kheda and Anand districts, reflecting a steady rise driven by sustained protection efforts. The wetland now hosts over 120 bird species, attracting birdwatchers and nature lovers seeking peaceful, nature-based experiences. This success is the result of collective action by the Forest Department, NGOs, students, and local farmers. NGOs, including the Shroffs UPL Foundation through its Sarus Conservation Project, support scientific monitoring and community outreach. Overall, Pariej mirrors the Gujarat Government’s eco-tourism vision, where conservation, community participation, and sustainable tourism grow together.
