Manipur’s orange bowl blends tradition with ecological wisdom

Dailong (Manipur), 03 July, ANI: Nestled in the hills of Manipur’s Tamenglong district, Dailong is a picturesque Naga village that stands as a beacon of biodiversity and cultural legacy. Celebrated for its pristine ecology and the rare flora and fauna that thrive here, Dailong was declared a Biodiversity Heritage Site in 2017 under the Biological Diversity Act. This lush heaven is not just a sanctuary for endangered species — it is a living example of harmony between humans and nature, where conservation is woven into the everyday lives of the local Rongmei tribe. Perched at 4,100 feet above sea level, Dailong’s fertile loamy soil, natural drainage, and mild temperature around 25°C make it ideal for orange cultivation. With rainfall lasting seven to eight months, irrigation needs are minimal. Oranges are grown from seeds or through vegetative methods, ensuring high-quality yields. Known as the "Orange Bowl of Manipur," Dailong has also earned a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. In addition to oranges, the region also nurtures a variety of fruits like mango, banana, pineapple, avocado, and lemon.With a growing interest in crop diversity, farmers are gradually adopting mixed farming practices. Dailong’s blend of ecological richness and sustainable farming showcases how tradition and biodiversity can thrive together, offering a model for nature-friendly rural development.
