Manipur's Displaced Find Relief Amidst Challenges

Churachandpur (Manipur), 15 July ANI: In the peaceful Sharon Hills of Manipur, displaced families are finally finding new homes after nearly two years in relief camps. This marks the beginning of a major resettlement initiative for over 50,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) affected by the ethnic violence since May 2023. The effort is a collaborative one—land was donated by Churachandpur MLA and construction was funded by the Vaiphei Baptist Church Association (VBCA), reflecting a strong partnership between government, NGOs, and local communities. Under President’s Rule, the Manipur government has introduced a three-phase plan to close all 350 relief camps and rehabilitate IDPs by December 2025, including financial support for rebuilding homes. Health has been a major concern. Medical teams, led by District Family Welfare Officer Dr. Kholi Sania Monica, have continued to offer regular check-ups, child immunizations, mental health counselling, and distribution of sanitary products under national health schemes. Despite challenges like supply shortages, health workers have remained on the ground. However, IDPs—both Kuki and Meitei—still face deep financial struggles and loss of livelihood. While the new homes bring dignity and hope, long-term recovery depends on continued compassion and coordinated support to help them rebuild their lives.
