India’s First Vertical Lift Railway Bridge Ready to Transform Travel

Updated:1 year, 5 months ago

Rameswaram, a revered pilgrimage destination, has long relied on the Pamban Bridge for its crucial connection to the mainland. This iconic bridge, an engineering marvel since 1914, served as a vital lifeline for over a century. However, after 105 years of service, the bridge was closed in December 2022 due to wear and corrosion, marking the end of an era. A new chapter begins with the introduction of India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge. Spanning 2.10 kilometers with a 72-meter vertical lift span, this state-of-the-art bridge will revolutionize travel. Trains will run smoothly at speeds up to 80 km/h, while its vertical lift mechanism will allow ships to pass beneath when no rail traffic is present. With a construction cost of ₹535 crore and five years of meticulous work, the bridge will provide faster, more efficient travel for pilgrims journeying to the Ramanathaswamy Temple. This seamless integration of rail and maritime passage will redefine regional connectivity.
