Help Foundation launches drive to preserve Kashmir’s iconic Tapestry craft

Srinagar (J&K), November 19 (ANI): In an effort to revive the declining handmade art and craft traditions of Kashmir, particularly the intricate tapestry artwork, the Help Foundation has launched a special initiative aimed at supporting artisans and restoring the heritage of these unique crafts.The project, supervised by experts from the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and trainers at the Baitul Meeras Center in Srinagar, focuses on training women in the delicate art of tapestry weaving. This traditional craft, which involves hand-weaving intricate woolen designs on cotton fabric, has suffered from diminishing demand and an unstable socio-economic environment in the region. Every day, a group of women aged 20 to 50 gathers at the heritage Baitul Meeras building in downtown Srinagar to learn the craft. Over the year-long program, 150 women will receive training to create tapestry rugs, shawls, wall hangings, and cushion covers. The initiative plans to integrate 50 of these artisans into Shehjar, a local brand that promotes and sells artisan products online and at exhibitions. The remaining artisans will be encouraged to establish home-based enterprises, ensuring sustained livelihoods. The initiative is seen as a crucial step in preserving Kashmir’s cultural identity while empowering the local artisan community to reclaim their craft’s lost glory.
