Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, the historic site where Mahatma Gandhi developed his principles of truth and non-violence, is entering a new phase of redevelopment. The Gujarat government’s project expands the ashram from 5 to 55 acres, while preserving 36 original structures from the 1930s to maintain Gandhi’s simplicity and legacy. Part of a larger 322-acre plan initiated under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the redevelopment includes restoration of heritage buildings, new museums, gardens, visitor facilities, and upgraded infrastructure. Launched in March 2024, the project aims to revive Gandhian ideals, enhance the visitor experience, and boost tourism. PM Modi is scheduled to visit on January 11–12 to review the progress. The initiative is emerging as a model for heritage conservation.
