Gujarat’s Fish Economy Booms with Rising Output & Exports

According to government data, from fish exports worth rupees 625 crore in 2001, the state now records over 6,000 crore rupees—a nearly ten-fold rise. With India’s longest 2,340 km coastline and modern policies, Gujarat has become the second-largest marine fish producer, averaging 8.56 lakh metric tonnes in the last four years. Along the Ambika River, Dholai Port has emerged as a key hub—built in 1995, and operated by Department of Fisheries since 2007, it now buzzes with hundreds of boats daily. Local leaders say the growth in fisheries sector reflects stronger livelihoods and state support. This year, the Gujarat government announced a ₹1,622 crore fisheries package for shrimp production, cold storage, cage culture, and by-product processing. With thriving ports, rising exports, and fresh investment, Gujarat’s marine economy is expanding faster than ever—preserving traditional livelihoods while powering a modern, technology-driven fisheries sector.
