Gujarat: Surat focuses on sustainable Ganesh Utsav with newly constructed ponds for idol immersions

Surat (Gujarat), September 13 (ANI): In a bid to protect the environment and preserve rivers, the Gujarat government has constructed 21 new ponds in Surat within just 15 days, at a cost of approximately Rs 5 crore. These ponds, built specifically for Ganesh idol immersions, aim to prevent pollution in the Tapi river during the ongoing Ganesh Utsav. Surat, the second-largest city in India to celebrate Ganesh Utsav after Mumbai, is set to immerse around 84,000 idols this year. The Gujarat government, along with Surat Municipal Corporation, has taken responsibility for managing the immersions, ensuring the idols are collected from the ponds and buried in soil. This initiative is playing a crucial role in keeping the Tapi river clean.
