Gujarat: Government launches digital livestock survey to improve animal welfare

Gujarat government has begun the livestock census using digital methods. Last July, a pilot survey was conducted in four states of the country, with the trial run implemented only in Jamnagar district of Gujarat. During that time, livestock data was collected in rural areas on an experimental basis. In Jamnagar district, livestock counting is being done via mobile phones. Currently, 92 employees, 17 supervisors, and one nodal officer are working for the 2024 livestock census. These employees visit the homes of livestock owners to gather information about the animals. In addition, data is being collected digitally about different categories of animals, including oxen used in agriculture. The government-conducted livestock census helps determine the number of cows, buffaloes, and other livestock in the district. This also facilitates the implementation of government schemes. The census is conducted every five years. The census helps in planning new schemes based on livestock numbers and diversity, improving old schemes, enhancing animal health services, and vaccinating animals. The census can also assist in decision-making regarding grazing conditions, vaccination, deworming operations, and other policy matters in challenging situations.
