Grey Hypocolius emerges as key attraction at Chhari-Dhandh wetland in Gujarat’s Kachchh

Chhari-Dhandh Conservation Reserve in Gujarat’s Kachchh district has emerged as a global birdwatching hotspot with the arrival of the rare Grey Hypocolius. Recently recognised as a Ramsar site, the wetland is drawing growing international attention for its rich avian biodiversity. Grey Hypocolius, locally known as Maskati Latoro, migrates from West Asia and winters in Kachchh. Experts say Chhari-Dhandh is India’s most reliable site to spot this rare bird. Declared Gujarat’s first Conservation Reserve in 2008, Chhari-Dhandh hosts over 283 bird species. Under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s leadership, sustained conservation efforts are protecting wetlands and boosting eco-tourism.
