March 16 (ANI): On 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Iran, Iranian Foreign Minister shared a ‘special message’ to India, which EAM Jaishankar reciprocate in equal amplitude. Why this ‘friendly’ gestures between the two nations holds unique importance in the present geopolitical paradigm? In recent years, when tension between Israel and Iran reached its height, with United States backing Israel, India held strongly to its historical ties with Iran, and advocated for peace in the region. Amid historical turns in relations between nations, Iran and India’s this exchange of admiration and commitment leaves an important and lasting message in the world. Ever since, the two nations established a formal diplomatic relation by signing a ‘friendship treaty’ on 15th March 1950, ties between the countries have only strengthened with time, with the signing of Tehran and New Delhi Declarations followed it in 2001 and 2003 respectively. Depth of the relations is also reflected by India’s major investment in Chabahar Port project in Iran. Chabahar Agreement was signed between India, Iran and Afghanistan, on May 2016, to establish the International Transport and Transit Corridor. This trilateral agreement strengthened India’s presence in the middle-east. Iranian Ambassador Iraj Elahi, on February 11, called Chabahar Port the "golden gateway" for regional connectivity, highlighting its role in strengthening India-Iran ties through a long-term operational agreement and the International North-South Transport Corridor. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India has already supplied port equipment worth about 24 million US Dollars to develop the Chabahar Port. The process for procurement of remaining port equipment for Chabahar Port is underway. Iran has also been an important partner nation in the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), emphasizing its commitment to multilateralism and economic and security cooperation in the region.
