17 October 2025, ANI, Coonoor (Tamilnadu): Nestled in the lush, emerald heart of South India lies a journey unlike any other. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, lovingly known as the toy train, is more than just a ride—it's a moving masterpiece through time, nature, and one of Indian Railways’ most treasured engineering marvels. Built by the British in 1908, this UNESCO World Heritage Site still faithfully chugs up the stunning Nilgiri Hills, connecting Mettupalayam to the scenic hill station Ooty, via the charming town of Coonoor. Stretching just 46 kilometers, the route is nothing short of extraordinary. Lovingly maintained by Indian Railways to keep its legacy alive, the train carves its way through 208 tight curves, clings to steep mountainsides, and rolls past endless hills of tea gardens and dense forest. Every turn tells a story of ingenuity, resilience, and deep-rooted heritage. But this is more than a marvel of engineering—it's a ride that awakens the senses and touches the soul. With its narrow-gauge tracks, charming wooden coaches, and wide vintage windows, this century-old marvel is a beautifully preserved journey back in time. Meticulously cared for by Indian Railways, the toy train perfectly blends authentic heritage with modern comfort, offering passengers a truly unique experience.
