Behind the Scenes: Gujarat FSL Races Against Time to Identify Crash Victims

Gandhinagar, Gujarat This is the DNA Lab of the Directorate of Forensic Science in Gujarat. Currently, it's a critical hub where the identification of victims from the tragic Ahmedabad plane crash is underway, primarily through DNA testing.Isolation Lab: The first crucial step in DNA identification begins here, in the Isolation Lab. This is where preliminary examinations are conducted on postmortem samples as well as human remains recovered from the accident site. In the DNA Isolation Lab, DNA is meticulously separated from these samples. This includes challenging materials like burnt bones, teeth, and tissue matter, all undergoing chemical treatment to extract the DNA. The entire process relies on a variety of advanced machinery.Quantification Lab: Once the DNA is isolated, it moves to the Quantification Lab. Here, the focus is on assessing both the quantity and quality of the extracted DNA. Cutting-edge instruments such as RT-PCR and liquid handling systems are actively employed in this vital stage.PCR Lab: To ensure there's enough DNA for accurate analysis, the PCR Lab steps in. Using the PCR method and a "thermal cycler machine," the amount of DNA isolated from the samples is amplified. This process also makes extensive use of various STR kits. Sequencing Lab: Finally, DNA samples that have successfully passed through all the preceding stages arrive at the Sequencing Lab for the ultimate phase. In this lab, the DNA samples are run through a sequencing machine. The primary data obtained from this process allows the senior scientists at the FSL to prepare a comprehensive DNA profile.
