Guwahati (Assam), November 16 (ANI): Assam tea sales at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) reached an impressive 2,800 crores in FY 2024-25, according to official data. A total of 111.03 million kilograms of tea were sold at an average price of Rs 252 per kilogram by the end of October 2024. This marks a significant improvement from the same period last year, where 102.92 million kilograms of tea generated 2,059 crores. Dinesh Bihani, Secretary of the Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers’ Association (GTABA), highlighted the increased demand and higher pricing. Despite the gains, climate change has affected both the quality and quantity of tea production in Assam. The Assam government and the central government have implemented several initiatives to develop tea garden areas. Notably, most tea estates in Assam have adopted digital payment systems for labor wages, and GTAC has fully digitalized its operations. The GTAC recently celebrated the bicentennial of Assam tea, underscoring the region's historic contribution to the global tea industry
