Scorpion venom may reduce severe arthritis

New Delhi, Mar 1 (ANI): In a study conducted by Baylor College of Medicine, it has been found that components found in scorpion venom can reduce the severity of Rheumatoid Arthritis. In the tests with animal models, it was found that one of the hundreds component found in scorpion venom can reduce the severity of the disease. “One of the components of scorpion venom, Buthus tamulus specifically blocks the potassium channel of FLS which causes damage to the joints”, said first author Dr. Mark Tanner. The researchers are further investigating this venom component, called iberiotoxin, would be able to specifically block the FLS potassium channel. The study has been published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.
