BJP leader and party's candidate from Ambala assembly constituency, Anil Vij, downplayed the wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia joining the Congress party on Friday and said that "anyone can join any party."
Wrestler Vinesh Phogat expressed pride as she joined the Congress party on Friday and said that the party "understood their pain and tears" when they faced police action during the protests at Delhi's Jantar Mantar last year.
After being inducted Vinesh Phogat said, "The fight is continuing." Both the top wrestlers were part of protests by wrestlers over sexual harassment allegations against former BJP MP and then Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh last year.
Ahead of wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia joining the Congress, Haryana Congress Spokesperson Kewal Dhingra stated that the central leadership of the party will decide whether they will contest the elections considering factors like winnability.
Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik said that it was the personal choice of wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat to join the Congress. She added that she had also received offers to join politics but she had no inclination towards it.
Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia are scheduled to meet Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge at his residence in Delhi at 2 p.m. followed by official joining at Party Headquarters on Friday.
Former Wrestling Federation of India president and BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh reaffirmed his stance that the allegations put against him are a conspiracy by Congress.
Singh, India's first male wrestler to join MMA and the first ambassador of the Wrestling Federation of India (2014-2015), will square off against Nasir at Heroes sq. 1 in Tbilisi, Georgia, on September 21, as per the release by MMA.
