The workshop aimed to discuss the role of early warning systems in contributing to the goals of the World Meteorological Organisation and raising awareness among communities exposed to risks.
Prof Jukka Petteri Taalas, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organisation, said that the UAE economy is less than 20% dependent on fossil fuels, making it the finest model in the Gulf region in this field.
Dr Abdulla Al Mandous, Director General of the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) in the UAE, has been elected as the new President of WMO for a four-year term from 2023 to 2027 with 98 votes.
Saulo was appointed after receiving the requisite two-thirds majority of votes from delegates at the quadrennial World Meteorological Congress, the top decision-making body of the 193-Member WMO, according to an official release.
Ahmed Abdul Rahman Al Jarman, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, delivered a keynote address reiterating the UAE's full support for the Early Warning Systems for All Initiative.
