Despite a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica at Al Bayt Stadium, Japan's 2-1 victory over Spain in Doha effectively eliminated Germany's chances of qualifying from Group E.
Following a 0-0 tie with Croatia, Belgium was eliminated from the group stage, placing third behind the Croatians and group winners Morocco. Belgium would have advanced to the round of 16 if they had won their last group encounter.
The win however could not save the four-time champions from an early departure as Germany suffered its second straight exit. They had also failed to reach the 2018 edition's round of 16.
