Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an increase in the wheat procurement target from USD 1.4 million tonnes to USD 1.8 million tonnes after protests by farmers over delays in the grain's buying process.
Opposition members in the Punjab Assembly boycotted house proceedings on Friday to show solidarity with wheat growers. They also announced plans to launch a protest on Monday against what they termed the poor wheat procurement policy of the incumbent government.
After deliberations, the estimates for wheat procurement during ensuing marketing season 2024-25 were fixed in the range of 300-320 lakh tonne. Similarly, the estimates for paddy procurement in term of rice during 2023-24 (Rabi Crop) were fixed in the range of 90-100 LMT.
Wheat procurement till Wednesday during RMS 2023-24 is 195 lakh metric tonne (LMT) whereas in RMS 2022-23, the procurement was 188 LMT. This has largely benefitted the farmers.
There were reports from various wheat-growing states that unseasonal rains have flattened standing crops in some regions. Wheat, a rabi crop was in an advanced maturing stage, and was expected to hit mandis in a fortnight or so.
Amid higher production estimates of wheat, a senior Food Corporation of India (FCI) official said on Friday that the government and private sector need to work together to ensure that prices remain stable
CM Chouhan said, "It was decided in the excise policy to close the Ahatas (a palace attached to liquor shops to facilitate drinking). I am happy to inform you that it has been implemented. A total of 2611 Ahatas across the state have been closed."
"We all know due to the untimely rain and hailstorm farmers have suffered huge losses. The day when CM Chouhan was playing Holi, the farmers were mourning for their loss," said Choudhary.
