After paying a visit to violence-hit Canning in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, Governor CV Ananda Bose on Saturday said that he was "deeply distressed" with the clashes which took place on the last day of filing nominations for the panchayat elections.
Curfew has been imposed under section 144 in Manipur after clashes broke out between Kuki and the Meitei communities on May 3. The violence that followed has claimed over 100 lives and displaced thousands.
"There is only one reason why Manipur is burning. It is because of the ideology of the RSS and the politics of the BJP. Everything else is a diversion from this basic fact," he said.
A clash was reported between two groups of Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers outside the Block Development Office in Canning in West Bengal's South 24 Paraganas on Wednesday over the filing of nominations for the upcoming state panchayat polls.

Hitting out the Central government for the continuous violent incidents in Manipur, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Friday said that Prime Minister and Union Home Minister were busy in election campaigning in Karnataka when the situation in Manipur was deteriorating.
In an address to the media Kunal Ghosh said, "Whatever is going on in Bhangar is the conspiracy of the Congress, CPI-M and the ISF. There is a script written since the opposition does not have any candidate and hope of winning the election."
Noting the unabated sectarian violence in Manipur, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Friday said that despite Union Home Minister Amit Shah's four-day visit to the northeastern state the situation did not change.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday asserted that the panchayat poll nomination process was peaceful, and slammed the opposition parties for trying to create an issue over some sporadic incidents.
