After 23 days of communal unrest Section 144 has been removed in Purola town of Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand. Community-specific shops have started opening under police protection after the situation improved on Saturday.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami virtually inaugurated 55 bridges constructed in the villages of hilly districts of the state through Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation (HESCO) and the ICICI Foundation at the Chief Minister's Camp Office on Saturday.
"Under the sub-article (1) of the article (3) of the Uttar Pradesh Essential Services Maintainance Act (1966), the Lieutenant Governor forbids strikes under state services for the six months starting from the date of issuance of the notice", said the official statement.
Uttarkashi District Magistrate Abhishek Ruhela on Friday said that security forces are deployed in Purola and Section 144 will continue to be imposed in the wake of communal tension in Uttarakhand.
The court in its order on Thursday asked the concerned parties to refrain from TV debates and venting their views on social media about this issue, the Uttarakhand High Court said.
A mahapanchayat that was called in Dehradun on June 18 was cancelled after Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami assured action, the police said.
